The Roopkund Trek is among the most fascinating and adventurous treks in Uttarakhand, known for its mystery lake filled with ancient human skeletons. Sitting at an altitude of 16,499 ft, Roopkund Lake is often called the “Skeleton Lake,” as hundreds of human remains dating back to the 9th century lie preserved beneath its icy waters—a mystery that continues to intrigue historians and trekkers alike.
The journey to Roopkund takes you through some of the most diverse Himalayan landscapes: dense oak and rhododendron forests, rolling alpine meadows of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, crystal-clear streams, and high-altitude snowfields. From the final climb, trekkers are rewarded with close-up views of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba peaks, making it one of the most scenic trails in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Adventurous, historic, and visually stunning—the Roopkund Trek is a must for those who seek mystery and thrill wrapped in Himalayan beauty.

Itineraries
Day 1
Drive From Rishikesh To Lohajung (280Km)
Your journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh (Natraj Chowk / Bus Stand) at 6:00 AM. A scenic 10-hour drive takes you through the heart of Uttarakhand, passing by three of the sacred Panch Prayag—Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag—where tributaries join the holy Ganga.
On a clear day, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing glimpses of the majestic Garhwal Himalayas in the distance. As you arrive at Lohajung, the base camp, the mighty Nanda Ghunti peak welcomes you with breathtaking views. If you reach before sunset, watch the mountain glow in surreal shades—an experience you’ll never forget.
At Lohajung, you’ll also find small local shops offering trekking gear on rent or for purchase—such as jackets, gloves, caps, and shoes. However, we strongly recommend carrying all your essentials from home and not depending entirely on local availability.
Day 2
Trek From Lohajung To Didna Village (5Km)
Altitude Gain: 7,650 ft → 8,045 ft
After a warm-up session and trek briefing, we begin our journey towards Didna Village. The trail takes us through dense forest along the scenic Neel Ganga River. The initial stretch is a gentle downhill walk until we reach the river crossing via a metal bridge.
From here, the path begins to ascend steadily. A 2-hour climb through beautiful alpine forests brings us to a ridge that opens up to stunning views of the surrounding valleys and meadows. Along the ridge, you’ll notice a series of vast open grounds that add to the charm of the landscape.
Didna and Kulling are two picturesque villages in this region, each popular in different seasons—Didna being a preferred summer settlement and Kulling for winters.
After completing the day’s hike, we settle in for the evening at Didna Village, where you’ll experience a cozy homestay stay with warm hospitality, perfect for unwinding after the trek.
Day 3
Trek From Didna Village To Ali Bugyal (9Km)
Altitude Gain: 8,045 ft → 11,200 ft
Wake up to the golden glow of sunrise painting the Himalayan peaks and prepare for an exciting day of trekking. After an early breakfast, we begin our climb from Didna Village towards the famous Ali Bugyal meadows.
The trail starts with a steady ascent up to the Ali Bugyal ridge. From here, the path becomes gentler, offering long stretches of flat walk and gradual climbs. As you step onto Ali Bugyal, you’ll find yourself surrounded by one of the most spectacular alpine meadows in India—rolling green pastures stretching endlessly, with towering mountains standing guard in the distance.
Along the way, the snow-clad peaks of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul reveal themselves in the eastern horizon, creating breathtaking backdrops at every turn. The day’s pace is easy, allowing plenty of time for photography and soaking in the surreal beauty of the landscape.
Our campsite for the night lies in a quiet forest clearing between Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, known locally as Abin Kharak (Khobal Tal). Rest under the starlit sky as the silence of the forest embraces you.
Day 4
Trek From Ali Bugyal To Bedni Bugyal To Patar Nachauni (6Km)
Altitude: 12,500 ft
Today’s trek is relatively short, designed to help with acclimatization as we gain more altitude. From this point onward, the air begins to thin, so gradual progress is essential before moving to higher camps.
We start by walking through the enchanting Ali Bugyal meadows and climbing gently for about half an hour until we join the trail from Ali Bugyal. The path ahead is mostly flat as we cross Ghora Lautani. Soon after, the trail splits, and we take the rightward path leading us toward Patar Nachauni. The trek is easy and covers about 6 km in roughly 3 hours.
Along the way, we cross the vast alpine expanse of Bedni Bugyal, one of the most beautiful high-altitude meadows in the Himalayas. Here, you’ll be greeted by a riot of wildflowers in bloom (in season), endless green pastures, and panoramic views of snow-clad Himalayan peaks that make the landscape truly magical.
At the heart of Bedni Bugyal lies the serene Bedni Kund, a crystal-clear mountain lake beside a small temple. It is a sacred spot where devotees often pay their respects. After soaking in this divine beauty, we continue onwards to Patar Nachauni (12,300 ft / 3,750 m), our campsite for the night.
Day 5
Trek From Patar Nachauni To Bhagwabasa (5Km)
Altitude: 14,400 ft
Today’s trek takes us higher into the mountains as we make our way to Bhagwabasa (4,300 m / 14,400 ft) via the sacred pass of Kailu Vinayak (4,400 m / 14,400 ft).
We begin with a gradual climb from Patar Nachauni, surrounded by open meadows and rolling ridges. The first 2 km ascend gently toward the ridge, after which the trail takes a sharp right turn and rises steeply for about 1.5 km. This section is one of the most demanding of the trek, as we gain nearly 1,500 ft of altitude in a short distance.
At the top lies Kailu Vinayak, marked by a small temple where trekkers often pause to rest and offer prayers. From here, the views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks are nothing short of breathtaking.
Continuing ahead, we traverse a well-defined trail towards Bhagwabasa, a campsite known for its rugged beauty. On the way, you’ll notice a small cave on the right side of the trail. According to legend, this was once the resting place of the tiger (Bagh in Hindi), believed to be the divine steed of Goddess Nanda Devi—giving the place its name, Bhagwabasa (Bagh = Tiger, Basa = Home).
The trek covers 5 km in about 3–3.5 hours, but the high altitude and steep sections make it feel more challenging. At Bhagwabasa, we camp for the night under the shadow of the great Himalayan giants.
Day 6
Trek From Bhagwabasa To Roopkund Summit and Back To Patar Nachauni (15Km)
Altitude: 15,750 ft
Today is the summit day—the most awaited and rewarding part of the trek! We begin our climb at around 5:00 AM, aiming to reach Roopkund (4,800 m / 15,750 ft) before the weather changes.
The ascent from Bhagwabasa to Roopkund covers about 4 km. Though the climb is moderate, the thin air and altitude make it physically demanding. Depending on the snow conditions, it can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to reach the summit. Until mid-June, the trail remains snow-covered, while from the monsoon season to late September, snow is much reduced, making the path easier to trace.
From the Bhagwabasa campsite, the trail traverses gently before reaching Chhiria Nag, meaning “snake staircase” due to its winding, zigzag path. From here, the climb becomes steeper, with one final rocky ascent leading to a flat stretch that opens up into the mystical Roopkund Lake.
At Roopkund, you’ll be standing beside a glacial depression surrounded by snowy peaks, with Nanda Ghunti and Trishul looming magnificently in the backdrop. The lake is famous for its ancient skeletal remains, believed to be over 1,200 years old, earning it the name “Mystery Lake.” Near the lake lies a small temple of Goddess Nanda Devi, where trekkers often offer prayers before beginning their descent.
After spending some time soaking in this surreal Himalayan wonder, we retrace our steps to Bhagwabasa. The descent is steeper and trickier than the ascent, demanding caution. From there, we continue via Kailu Vinayak and finally reach Patar Nachauni, where the lush green meadows make a perfect campsite to end this long and fulfilling day.
Day 7
Trek From Patar Nachauni To Wan Village and Drive to Lohajung (15Km)
Today is a long but rewarding descent as we make our way back to the lower valleys. From the campsite, a short climb brings us onto the main trail. We descend steadily for about an hour before reaching an open clearing inside the forest known as Gahroli Patal.
The trail continues downhill until we arrive at the riverbed of the Neel Ganga River, a serene spot where many trekkers take a short break. From here, there’s a final climb that takes us up to Ran Ka Dhar, the upper section of Wan Village.
At Wan, we conclude the trekking portion of the journey and board jeeps for a bumpy but scenic drive back to Lohajung (1 hour). After a fulfilling day of walking through forests, meadows, and riverside paths, we spend the evening back at the base camp in Lohajung.
Day 8
Drive From Lohajung to Rishikesh (280Km)
After morning tea, we bid farewell to the mountains and begin our return journey to Rishikesh. The drive takes around 10 hours, with an expected arrival between 6:00–7:00 PM. We recommend booking onward travel only after 7:00 PM to allow for safe connections.
With this, the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek comes to an end. You leave with a mosaic of breathtaking memories—snowy peaks, alpine meadows, sacred lakes, and warm Himalayan hospitality—that will stay with you forever.
